Short answerIndian citizens need a visa to visit Japan. Your visa sets how long you can stay.

How long you can stay
Your visa sets how long you can stay.
What you need
  • Valid passport covering the intended stay
  • Completed Japan visa application form
  • Passport-sized photo
  • Proof of itinerary / flight and hotel bookings
  • Financial capacity documents (bank statements) or sponsor's guarantee letter
  • Visa fee
  • Application lodged in advance at a Japanese Embassy/Consulate-General or the Japan Visa Application Centre (VFS Global) in India
Good to know
India is not among the 74 countries/regions on Japan's MOFA reciprocal visa-exemption list (page current as of the Sept 1, 2025 update: Note additions through Montenegro/Peru/Paraguay), so ordinary Indian tourists must obtain a visa before travel. Japan runs several facilitation programs referenced in general reporting - e.g. simplified/multiple-entry visa issuance for Indian nationals with strong prior travel history (G7-country visits) or registered frequent-traveler IC-chip arrangements - but these ease the *visa-application* process for repeat/pre-vetted travelers; they are not a blanket visa waiver, and a standard first-time leisure tourist from India still must apply for and receive a visa before arrival. Direct access to mofa.go.jp returned HTTP 403 (Akamai bot protection) during this check; the page content above was confirmed via an August 31, 2026 Wayback Machine capture of the same official MOFA URL.
