Montenegro entry requirements for Chinese citizens

Short answerChinese citizens need a visa to visit Montenegro. Your visa sets how long you can stay.
- How long you can stay
- Your visa sets how long you can stay.
- What you need
- Montenegrin short-stay (C) visa issued before travel — or a valid Schengen, US, UK or Irish visa/residence permit, which allows up to 30 days visa-free (no longer than that visa's validity)
- Passport issued within the last 10 years, valid at least 3 months after your planned departure, with at least two blank pages
- Travel health insurance (required for a C visa application)
- Registration of your stay with the police within 24 hours of arrival at each place of stay (hotels usually do this for you)
- Good to know
- The Government of Montenegro page states: 'Citizens of China must have a visa for Montenegro. Visas are issued by the Montenegrin diplomatic and consular missions.' Two narrow exemptions apply only until 31 October 2026: Chinese citizens travelling 'as an organized tourist group entering, staying, and leaving Montenegro together', with proof of a paid tourist arrangement and of guaranteed return, may stay up to 30 days; and holders of a valid Chinese business passport with an invitation letter may stay up to 30 days. From 1 November 2026 these end (Government decree of 23 July 2026, announced by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on 27 July 2026: nationals of China will require a visa as of 1 November 2026). Independent tourists need a visa now. Exception for visa holders (stated on the same page): holders of travel documents with a valid Schengen visa, a valid visa of the United States, the United Kingdom or Ireland, or a residence permit of those countries, 'may enter and stay in, or transit through, the territory of Montenegro for up to 30 days, but no longer than the expiration of their visa if the validity period is shorter than 30 days.' A short-stay (C) visa applicant must show travel health insurance (Law on Foreigners Art. 23), and the passport must be valid at least 3 months after departure, have two blank pages and have been issued within 10 years (Art. 24). A C visa allows at most 90 days in 180 (Art. 34). Passport: Art. 9 of the Law on Foreigners treats a foreign passport as valid only if it was 'issued in the last ten years' and will not expire for at least three months after the planned departure from Montenegro. Art. 8 also allows entry to be refused if you cannot show the purpose and conditions of your stay or have insufficient means of subsistence for the stay and the return or onward journey. Registration: Art. 96 requires a foreigner staying up to 90 days to register their stay with the police within 24 hours of arriving at each place of stay (and to deregister within 24 hours before leaving); hotels and accommodation providers register guests (Art. 101: within 12 hours), and in private accommodation you can register through the local tourist organisation free of charge. FCDO warns failure to register can lead to a fine, detention or a court appearance. Montenegro is not in the Schengen Area, so days here and in Schengen are counted separately. Staying longer than 90 days needs a long-stay (D) visa or residence permit.
