Can you bring cash to Taiwan?

Short answer
Depends on specifics

  • Cash

    depends on specifics

Taiwan sets hard caps, not just declaration thresholds, on two currencies: "Each passenger can't bring more than NT$100,000 with him/her when entering or leaving Taiwan" and separately "Renminbi is limited up to RMB$20,000" — amounts above either cap cannot be brought in at all, even with a declaration. Other foreign currencies work differently: amounts "in excess of US$10,000 (or its equivalent in other foreign currencies) must be declared," but there is no maximum once declared. Negotiable securities with a face value over US$10,000 must also be declared, with no cap.

This is a genuinely unusual rule most travelers don't expect: New Taiwan Dollars and Renminbi are capped by law, while every other currency (USD, EUR, etc.) has no cap at all as long as it's declared above the USD 10,000-equivalent threshold. Failing to declare excess declarable currency results in confiscation of the excess portion.
