Can you bring cash to Hong Kong?

Short answer
Allowed, must be declared

  • Cash

    allowed, must be declared

Anyone arriving at a specified control point with currency and bearer negotiable instruments totalling "more than HKD120,000" must "make a declaration to a Customs officer, using the Red Channel." The threshold applies in any currency (declare in the original currency, e.g. USD 20,000); an adult accompanying a child under 16 declares on the child's behalf.

Maximum penalty for failing to declare or disclose is a fine of HK$500,000 and two years' imprisonment. A first-time breach can be settled by paying HK$2,000 if the traveller has no prior money-laundering or terrorist-financing conviction and the money isn't suspected crime proceeds. Hong Kong has no currency import cap, only this declaration duty.

Also covers: cash, currency, money, bearer negotiable instruments, cheques
