Can you bring cash to Indonesia?

Short answer
Allowed, must be declared

  • Cash

    allowed, must be declared

Carrying cash (Rupiah or foreign currency) or negotiable payment instruments (cheques, traveler's cheques, promissory notes, bills of exchange) with a value equivalent to IDR 100,000,000 or more into or out of Indonesia must be declared to Customs on the Customs Declaration form. Separately, under Bank Indonesia rules, carrying physical foreign-currency banknotes (Uang Kertas Asing) equivalent to IDR 1,000,000,000 or more requires additional special permission from Bank Indonesia.

Failure to declare, or under-declaring, cash/instruments at or above the threshold can result in administrative penalties and potential confiscation. Travelers carrying large sums should check both the Customs declaration requirement and the separate Bank Indonesia physical-banknote permit rule.
