Short answerJapanese citizens can visit Malaysia without a visa. Up to 90 days per visit.

How long you can stay
Up to 90 days per visit.
What you need
  • Passport valid for at least 6 months on arrival (Japan MOFA: 残存有効期間が6か月以上)
  • Malaysia Digital Arrival Card (MDAC), registered online from 3 days before departure (mandatory for international air arrivals since 1 December 2023)
  • Biometric fingerprint enrolment at immigration (both thumbs and index fingers)
Good to know
Japan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs states (translated): because a visa-exemption arrangement exists between Japan and Malaysia, a visa is not required for stays of up to three months for tourism or visiting acquaintances, except for anyone doing paid work; a visa is still needed for religious activity, research or TV/film shooting even on a short stay, and for work before entry. The stay granted under the exemption arrangement is 'within 3 months' and the officer writes the permitted period in the passport. Sabah and Sarawak run separate entry control and require showing the passport even for travel from peninsular Malaysia.
