Short answerJapanese citizens need an electronic travel authorisation (ETA) before travelling to Australia. Up to 90 days per visit.

How long you can stay
Up to 90 days per visit.
What you need
  • Valid passport (eligible for ETA)
  • Australian ETA smartphone app (iOS or Android) used to apply
Good to know
Electronic Travel Authority (subclass 601). The passport must be on the list in the Migration (IMMI 18/084: Specification of ETA-Eligible Passports) Instrument 2018. Home Affairs states the permitted stay as “up to 3 months at a time” (not a numeric day count) — maxDays: 90 is published here as the standard day-equivalent of that 3-month wording, not a figure stated verbatim as “90 days” by Home Affairs; see data/UNVERIFIED/TODO.md for this calendar-month-vs-fixed-day nuance. AUD20 service charge applies via the Australian ETA app.
