Can you bring cash to Cyprus?

Short answer
Allowed, must be declared

  • Cash

    allowed, must be declared

Anyone entering or leaving Cyprus with €10,000 or more in cash (or the equivalent in other currencies or bearer instruments such as traveller's cheques), or gold worth €10,000 or more, must declare it in writing to Customs at the point of entry or exit. Failing to declare is an offence: the cash or gold is seized and you can be fined up to €50,000.

Cyprus Customs' page (last updated 2020) still cites the repealed Regulation (EC) 1889/2005; the current EU rule is Regulation (EU) 2018/1672 (EC DG TAXUD), which keeps the €10,000 threshold and defines cash as banknotes and coins, bearer negotiable instruments, gold coins of at least 90% gold and gold bars/nuggets of at least 99.5% gold. Cyprus' page also applies the declaration to travel to/from other EU member states (national Law 53(I)/2009).

Also covers: cash, currency, money, travellers cheques, gold, bonds, shares
