Can you bring cash to Montenegro?
Short answer
Allowed, declaration may be required
Cash
allowed, declaration may be requiredYou must declare to customs, on entry and on exit, cash of EUR 10,000 or more (or the equivalent in other currencies), and the same applies to cheques, bearer securities, precious metals and precious stones of that value. Customs ask for full documentation on where the money came from.
Customs Administration operational notice no. D-6425/1-25 of 8 May 2025: anyone carrying 'novac, čekovi, hartije od vrijednosti na donosioca, dragocjeni metali ili drago kamenje' worth EUR 10,000 or more across the border must declare it to customs and provide complete documentation on its origin. If undeclared money has no sign of illegal origin it is not seized, but a misdemeanour penalty order is issued. If there is suspicion about its origin (declared or not, and at any amount), customs may hold the money and the person for up to 6 hours while the police Financial Intelligence Unit and prosecutor decide. The Customs Administration's 2016 instruction (also published on the same page) cites the legal basis as Art. 10 of the Law on Current and Capital Transactions with Foreign Countries and the Decision setting EUR 10,000 as the limit for carrying cash without declaring it, and gives a fine of EUR 550–2,000 for individuals (that figure is from 2016 and may have changed). UK FCDO advice agrees: declare cash or travellers' cheques of EUR 10,000 or more, keep the certified declaration, or the money may be seized when you leave.
Also covers: cash, money, currency, euros, dollars, travellers cheques, cheques, bearer instruments, gold, precious metals
