Can you bring a weapon to Montenegro?
Short answer
Depends on specifics
Weapons
depends on specificsVisitors without permanent residence may bring hunting or sporting firearms and ammunition only to hunt or take part in sports competitions (or cultural events), and the weapon must be entered in your passport (by a Montenegrin embassy/consulate, or by the border police if you hold a licence to carry it in your home country). Declare it to the border police on arrival with your weapon document and proof of purpose (invitation letter, hunt or competition organiser's notice). Cross only at international border crossings, and you may not sell the weapon.
Law on Weapons and Ammunition (Zakon o oružju i municiji), adopted 31 July 2026 and proclaimed 3 August 2026, which replaces the 2015 Law on Weapons: Art. 66 (foreigners without permanent residence may carry weapons across the border for hunting, sports competitions and cultural events, only at international crossings, and may not sell them), Art. 67 (must declare weapons and ammunition to the border police and show the weapon document and proof of purpose), Art. 72 (hunting/sporting weapons must be entered in the travel document; the border police issues an entry approval and cancels it on exit). Art. 75 (EU European Firearms Pass) applies only from Montenegro's EU accession. Other weapon types (self-defence weapons, knives, pepper spray, replicas) were not researched — treat them as not covered.
