Can you bring cash to Australia?

Short answer
Allowed, must be declared

  • Cash

    allowed, must be declared

Must declare if carrying AUD 10,000 or more (or foreign-currency equivalent), combined across cash and non-cash monetary instruments (bearer negotiable instruments), when entering or leaving Australia. No limit on the amount that may be carried — only a duty to declare at or above the threshold.

Applies to citizens, residents, and visitors alike, in both directions. Splitting cash among travellers to stay under the threshold ("structuring") is a criminal offence. Money transferred via a bank or remittance provider does not need to be declared.
