Short answerGerman citizens need an electronic travel authorisation (ETA) before travelling to the United Kingdom. Up to 180 days per visit.

How long you can stay
Up to 180 days per visit.
What you need
  • UK Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) approved before travel
  • Passport valid for the whole of your stay — a national ID card is only accepted if you have EU Settlement Scheme status, an EUSS family permit, a frontier worker permit, S2 Healthcare Visitor status, or a pending EUSS application
  • Proof you can support yourself and pay for your return or onward journey
Good to know
Germany is on the UK's ETA National List for travel on or after 2 April 2025. GOV.UK: citizens of the EU (except Irish citizens) need an ETA to visit without a visa; visitors can usually stay up to 6 months but may not live in the UK through frequent or successive visits.
