Can you bring fresh fruit or produce to New Zealand?

Short answer
Allowed, must be declared

  • Fresh produce & plants

    allowed, must be declared

All biosecurity risk goods — including fruit, vegetables, eggs, meat, honey, cooking ingredients, herbs, seeds, spices, items made from plant/wood material, and used outdoor equipment (e.g. footwear with soil) — must be declared on arrival, whether or not they are ultimately allowed in.

New Zealand's Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI) enforces very strict biosecurity controls to keep out pests and diseases. Declare via the New Zealand Traveller Declaration (app or travellerdeclaration.govt.nz), the paper arrival card, or directly to a biosecurity officer; undeclared items can also be placed in airport disposal bins before the declaration point. Failing to declare a risk item — even accidentally or 'because you forgot' — can trigger an instant NZD $400 infringement fine, with further prosecution possible for serious cases.
