Can you bring meat or dairy products to New Zealand?

Short answer
Allowed, must be declared

  • Meat & dairy

    allowed, must be declared

All animal products — meat, dairy, fish, honey, eggs, feathers, shells, wool, skins, bones — must be declared on arrival. Some (pork, trout, whole eggs) are banned outright; others are allowed only after inspection by Biosecurity New Zealand.

Failing to declare, even accidentally, draws an instant NZD 400 infringement fine — New Zealand runs the strictest biosecurity enforcement in this dataset. A proposal to raise this to NZD 800 for high-risk items (meat, fresh fruit) was reported as of February 2026 but had not taken effect as law at the time of writing — don't assume it's in force.

Also covers: meat, dairy, cheese, milk, honey, eggs
