Short answerUS citizens can get a visa on arrival in Tanzania. Up to 90 days per visit.

How long you can stay
Up to 90 days per visit.
What you need
  • Multiple Entry Visa — USD 100, valid 12 months (US nationals are not entitled to an Ordinary Visa)
  • Recent passport-size photo and copy of passport bio page (online application)
  • Passport valid at least 6 months, with at least one unused visa page
  • Return ticket (must be shown at the point of entry)
  • Mandatory Tanzanian inbound travel insurance (NIC for mainland entry, ZIC for entry via Zanzibar)
  • Yellow fever vaccination certificate if arriving from or transiting a yellow-fever country
Good to know
US passport holders "are not entitled to an Ordinary Visa" and "MUST apply for a Multiple Visa even if they plan for a single entry" (stated as due to bilateral agreements between Tanzania and the US). Fee USD 100, maximum validity 12 months, but "the maximum consecutive stay in the country is only three months... on each visit a holder may stay in the country for a maximum period of three months (90 days)". The USA is on Immigration's list of nationalities eligible for both online and on-arrival visas, but Immigration strongly recommends the online e-visa (visa.immigration.go.tz). Possible conflict: UK FCDO advice says a multiple-entry visa cannot be obtained on arrival (stated for British travellers); US travellers should apply online before travel to be safe. travel.state.gov was bot-blocked and could not be read. Mandatory inbound travel insurance: NIC's official FAQ states the cover "is mandatory to all foreigners traveling in Tanzania Mainland", entering by land, sea or air, premium the TZS equivalent of USD 44 per person, valid 92 days with multiple entries, buy online at inbound.nicinsurance.co.tz or at the entry point; residents of EAC/SADC partner states are excluded (https://inbound.nicinsurance.co.tz/faqs). Canada's travel advice (updated 7 Oct 2026) confirms the insurer is NIC for mainland entry and the Zanzibar Insurance Corporation (ZIC) for entry via Zanzibar. Yellow fever: Immigration's tourist-info page says visitors must follow the Ministry of Health's yellow fever requirements; Canada's advice says proof of vaccination is required if arriving from, or transiting an airport in, a yellow-fever country.
