Can you bring cash to Peru?
Short answer
Allowed, declaration may be required
Cash
allowed, declaration may be requiredDeclare cash and/or negotiable bearer instruments over US$10,000 (or equivalent). Carrying more than US$30,000 into or out of Peru is not allowed.
SUNAT: travellers entering or leaving must declare cash and/or negotiable financial instruments (traveller's cheques, bearer cheques and promissory notes, etc.) 'siempre que sea un monto mayor a US$ 10 000,00'; 'No está permitido ingresar o salir del país llevando dinero y/o instrumentos financieros negociables por más de US$ 30 000,00'. Use the Declaración Jurada de Equipaje plus the cash declaration form at the SUNAT (Aduanas) office after baggage claim. Failing to declare or declaring falsely means temporary retention of the full amount and a penalty of 30% of the undeclared value. Conflict: SUNAT's 'Bienes o artículos que debes declarar' page (gob.pe/15285) writes the ceiling as 'S/ 30,000.00' (soles); the dedicated cash page and SUNAT's declaration form both say US$30,000, which we treat as correct.
Also covers: cash, money, currency, dollars, travellers cheques, bearer instruments, efectivo
