Can you bring cannabis or CBD to Jamaica?
Short answer
Prohibited
Cannabis
prohibitedDo not bring cannabis into Jamaica. Small-amount possession inside Jamaica is a ticketable offence, and visitors can get a permit to buy medical ganja locally, but crossing the border with it is not allowed outside a narrow, regulated route for terminal or serious chronic illness.
Ministry of Justice fact sheet on the Dangerous Drugs (Amendment) Act 2015: possession of 2 ounces or less is no longer an arrestable offence but police may issue a ticket (J$500, payable within 30 days); possession of over 2 ounces remains a criminal offence. Import: 'A person who is suffering from cancer or any other terminal or serious chronic illness may import medicine or a therapeutic product derived from or containing ganja' if a registered medical practitioner certifies the illness and recommends its use, and 'The importation … must comply with regulations which are to be made' — this route is not open to ordinary travellers. Visitors: 'Persons who do not ordinarily reside in Jamaica (for example, tourists …) may apply for a permit to allow them to lawfully purchase and possess up to 2 ounces of ganja at a time, for medical or therapeutic purposes', with evidence of a home-country medical recommendation or a voluntary declaration; 'The permit is issued by Jamaica's Ministry of Health, and a fee is payable' (the fact sheet is undated; the Cannabis Licensing Authority site was not checked). Government of Canada (https://travel.gc.ca/destinations/jamaica, 26 May 2026): 'Do not attempt to enter or depart Jamaica and cross international borders with any amount of cannabis.' GOV.UK: 'It's illegal to smoke marijuana (ganja) in Jamaica' and severe penalties apply to other drug offences including attempting to export narcotics. The C5 card asks you to declare illicit drugs or narcotics. CBD: hemp (under 1% THC) is excluded from the DDA ganja provisions but its import is to be regulated by the Cannabis Licensing Authority — no traveller rule for CBD products was found, so treat CBD as not confirmed allowed.
