Can you bring cash to Mexico?

Short answer
Allowed, must be declared

  • Cash

    allowed, must be declared

Must file a declaration (form for “Declaración de Internación o Extracción de Cantidades en Efectivo o Documentos por Cobrar”) when carrying cash, domestic/foreign checks, payment orders, or other negotiable documents exceeding USD 10,000 or its equivalent into or out of Mexico.

Carrying more than USD 10,000 is not itself illegal; failing to declare it is. Under-declaring more than USD 10,000 carries a fine of 20–40% of the amount over the threshold; amounts over USD 30,000 that are undeclared can trigger criminal penalties (3–6 years) and forfeiture unless lawful origin is proven.

    Also covers: cash, currency, money
