Can you bring cash to Ecuador?
Short answer
Allowed, declaration may be required
Cash
allowed, declaration may be requiredDeclare cash, bearer negotiable instruments, precious metals and precious stones (combined) worth USD 10,000 or more, or the equivalent in other currencies, when entering OR leaving Ecuador, on the online Formulario de Registro Aduanero (FRA).
Applies to entry and exit (Art. 3; Art. 84 of the Ley Orgánica de Prevención, Detección y Combate del Delito de Lavado de Activos). Fill in the FRA before customs control and show the QR code or PDF with your passport. Penalties quoted in the resolution from that law: Art. 87 — administrative fine of 30% of the undeclared or falsely declared amount, without prejudice to criminal action; Art. 88 — 50% on reoffending. Leaving Ecuador: Ecuador charges a currency-outflow tax (ISD). SENAE quotes Art. 13.1 of the ISD regulation: foreign currency carried in by non-resident foreigners does not attract ISD on exit if the stay is no more than 90 calendar days and the amount was registered on entry — so register it on the FRA when you arrive. UK FCDO advice says amounts over USD 1,350 taken out are taxable (not checked against the SRI's own page).
