Can you bring cash to Chile?

Short answer
Allowed, declaration may be required

  • Cash

    allowed, declaration may be required

Cash or bearer negotiable instruments over US$10,000 (or the equivalent in any currency, including Chilean pesos) must be declared to Aduanas on entry and on exit.

Aduana 'Declaración de Dinero' page: 'Si ingresas o sales de Chile con más de US$ 10.000 o su equivalente en cualquier moneda debes declararlo ante Aduanas' (legal basis: art. 4 of Law 19.913); the same page's next sentence says 'desde 10.000 dólares' (from US$10,000) — so declaring at exactly US$10,000 is the safe choice. Declare to Aduana officials at the border checkpoint; the joint Aduana–SAG form has a yes/no box for it. Penalty: the current Aduana page quotes art. 168 bis of the Ordenanza de Aduanas — when the offence is detected Aduanas 'deberá retener la totalidad del dinero en efectivo o los instrumentos negociables al portador' and must bring criminal action immediately (the page links Law 21.632 strengthening anti-smuggling law). The older 2016 joint form instead describes a fine of up to 30% of the undeclared amount (Law 19.913 art. 39); the current Aduana page is treated as controlling and the conflict is noted.
