Can you bring kratom to Japan?

Short answer
Prohibited

The official rule for Japan below names kratom. The same rule also covers the other medicines it lists, so read the conditions carefully.

  • Kratom

    prohibited

Don't bring it. Kratom (Mitragyna speciosa, in forms that can be used on the body directly), mitragynine and 7-hydroxymitragynine are "designated substances" in Japan. Japan Customs lists designated substances as goods that can't be imported, except for medical or similar uses. Their manufacture, import, sale, possession and use are generally prohibited.

Japan designated kratom and its two main compounds in 2016, and they're still on the health ministry's list. The ban covers products containing them, such as kratom powder, capsules or extracts.

Also covers: kratom, mitragyna speciosa, mitragynine, 7-hydroxymitragynine
