Can you bring alcohol to Tanzania?

Short answer
Allowed, within limits

  • Alcohol

    allowed, within limits

Spirits (including liqueurs) or wine up to 2 litres in total, duty-free, for travellers aged 18 or over, in accompanied baggage

TRA lists, among goods on which "duty shall not be levied" when imported by and in possession of the passenger: "Spirits (including liquors) or wine, not exceeding two (2) litres". TRA notes the duty-free allowances are granted "only to passengers who have attained the age of eighteen (18) years" and not for unaccompanied baggage. Possible conflict: Kenya's revenue authority (KRA), applying the same EAC customs regime, words this allowance as 1 litre of spirits or 2 litres of wine. The EAC Customs Management Act schedule itself was not read in this pass. TRA's wording is used here; if you carry spirits, keeping to 1 litre is the cautious reading. Beer is not separately mentioned. Anything above the allowance must be declared and duty paid.

Also covers: alcohol, wine, beer, spirits, liquor, liqueur, whisky, vodka
