Can you bring melatonin to New Zealand?

Short answer
Depends on specifics

The official rule for New Zealand below names melatonin. The same rule also covers the other medicines it lists, so read the conditions carefully.

  • Melatonin

    depends on specifics

Melatonin bought overseas, such as a US supplement, is an unapproved medicine in New Zealand. Medsafe says you still need a prescription to import unapproved melatonin for personal use. With a prescription, New Zealand's normal rule for prescription medicine applies: bring no more than 3 months' supply, carry a copy of the prescription or a letter from your doctor, keep it in the original containers, and declare it on your arrival card.

Since June 2025 New Zealand pharmacies can supply some approved melatonin medicines without a prescription: up to 10 days' supply for jet lag and up to 30 days for insomnia. That covers only products approved in New Zealand, not supplements you bring from abroad.

    Also covers: melatonin, circadin
