Overstaying in Romania: fine, entry ban and enforcement

This is what Romania's own national law adds on top of the EU-wide entry-ban mechanism — every Schengen country runs that same baseline process, explained on the general overstay-penalties page, but the fine amount and exact enforcement style are set by each country individually.

Fine

Reported inconsistently across sources, roughly RON 400–1,000 depending on overstay duration — treat as approximate, not confirmed against the ordinance's exact penalty table

Entry ban

1 year for an illegal stay of 30 days to 1 year; 2 years for over 1 year; a minimum of 5 years for repeat violations

How it's enforced in practice

Legal basis is Emergency Ordinance (OUG) 194/2002 on the regime of foreigners in Romania. The ban-duration figures are consistent across multiple sources; the fine figure is not, and is reported here as approximate rather than precise. Sourced via a Romanian legal-database compiler (euroavocatura.ro) quoting the ordinance; Romania's own official legislative portals weren't fetched directly this pass.

This is informational only, not legal advice — consult a qualified adviser if you're facing an actual return decision or entry ban.
